Long before algorithms decided what we buy and saturation marketing invaded every corner of our lives, John Carpenter looked at 1980s consumerism and asked a wild question: what if the ruling class were actually blue-faced alien ghouls hiding in plain sight? In this video, we're grabbing our sunglasses, our backpack of tools, and plenty of bubblegum to dig into They Live (1988).
We cover how the film started as a six-page 1963 short story, John Carpenter's wild path to casting wrestling legend "Rowdy" Roddy Piper (and the mainstream action star Universal originally pushed for instead), and the legendary real-fight-turned-movie-magic alley brawl between Piper and Keith David that took three weeks to rehearse. We also dig into Piper's now-iconic ad-libbed one-liner, behind-the-scenes cast trivia, the film's box office run against Halloween 4, and its lasting status as a VHS and cable cult classic.
Whether you grew up quoting "I'm here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum" without even knowing what movie it's from, or you're discovering this subversive slice of 80s sci-fi for the first time, hit play and join us.
👍 Like this video if you still quote the bubblegum line!
